Spine Problems

Most of us take our spines for granted unless they aren’t working well and cause us pain, stiffness or lack of mobility. We use them all the time, from getting out of bed, lifting things, bending, sitting standing, working and for fun after work.

How Can I Help My Spine?

Posture

Bad posture puts a lot of strain on your spine and body. Apart from poor appearance, hunching, slouching and awkward positions can also cause your spinal health to deteriorate over time. This can result in pain, poor mobility and decreased flexibility.

Proper Lifting Technique

This can reduce the chances of injuring yourself. Keep your back upright and bend from your knees, not your waist. Leg muscles are much bigger than spinal muscles and are designed for heavier work. Reduce the strain on your spine by keeping the object you’re lifting close to your body. Know your limits! Even with groceries and shopping bags. Know when they are too heavy for you. Do more trips with lighter loads and use more shopping bags.

Movement

Moving is good for you. It is one of the best things you can do for your whole body. Whether it’s walking, dancing, swimming, running or riding a bike, it helps to keep your spine strong and flexible. Look for ways to include more movement in your day. If you sit most of the day, regular breaks can help. Get up and walk every 30 minutes, use the stairs instead of the lift or escalator, walk around whilst talking on the phone or get off the bus a stop earlier than usual. It all adds up.

Technology

The Australian Chiropractors’ Association has an app Called Straighten Up. You can use this to remind yourself to sit well, take breaks, stretch, improve your posture and drink water. It is free from the App Store or Google Play. This can help to take care of your health when you’re busy. Including small changes in your lifestyle over time can become habits that can help improve your health and strengthen your spine.
